very serious is an ongoing experiment in creative self expression, dedicated to the principles of connection, exploration, and authenticity. We believe we're all a part of the same thing, so we might as well say what we want to say, listen to each other, and not take everything so damn serious.
We're all a part of the same thing. Every single one of us, no matter who or where or how, opened their little eyes one day and became a part of the thing. Call it the Universe, call it the Collective Self, call it Spaceship Earth, call it whatever you want or call it nothing at all. We’re all a part of it, and in being pieces of that unnamable whole, we are connected. Because we make up this thing and are inextricable from it and each other, each of us can find belonging, our own little thread in a big web of connection.
I don’t always feel like I belong. I often feel just the opposite. Like somehow the thread connecting me to the rest of the thing was pulled so tight it snapped… or maybe was never there in the first place?
Often, a momentary panic is all it takes for me to realize the thread hasn’t snapped. It’s always been there and always will be there, I just drop it sometimes. Being a strand of thread, it can take focused searching to find, like a needle in a haystack or a movie on Netflix that’s not a waste of your time, but every time I pick it up again the thread feels a little thicker.
Reading and writing has always been a sort of flashlight I can shine into the dark when I lose sight of my connective thread. I read other people’s stories and recognize the thoughts and feelings and experiences I once thought isolated me, and I feel the thread pull me closer to the center of the thing. I’m not alone.
I write my stories and document my thoughts and feelings because it’s the best way I know to take the connectedness I’ve found and extend it for others to maybe find one day, too. So they can see themselves in me and me in them and all of us in the thing and know they’re not alone.
The thing about the thing is, thought we are all a part of it, we can choose to act as such - to hold tight to our threads and follow them toward each other - or to forget. To drop our threads to the ground and walk away, ducking under and swerving around and hopping over all the others in an attempt to ignore the truth.
It’s a very serious choice, but it’s an easy one to make. This website is my attempt to actively make the right choice every day and to help others with theirs. I hope this little web of thoughts, feelings, and stories can be a flashlight for whatever it is you’re searching to find. And if it’s not, maybe it can at least be somewhat entertaining. It’s not that serious.
We’re all a part of this thing, and the more we can foster our connection to each other and the planet, the happier we’ll all be while we’re here together.
